catchphrases that are so comfortable

"In catchphrases that are so comfortable, we speak to each other fluently so as not to arouse suspisions. We are meaning other than what we are saying." HB

the following are exerpts from Book on Manners circa 1950

"Slang can be expressive. Words such as chisler, jitters, and wallop are not easily replaced. But you will gain nothing by using such slang such as:"

"notch
gee whiz!

classy
dope
no kidding!
holy cow!

gal
just dandy
lousy
nerts
oh boy!
kee-rect

okey dokey
scram
heck
icky
toots
jeepers!"

"Avoid tiresome and exaggerated expressions of this type: for crying out loud, gets my throat, I thought I'd die, for Pete's sake, out of this world, I nearly had a fit, I don't get you, hope to tell you, it was a scream, well what do you know!

I wonder if you are grown up enough to wince at some of the sounds that young people try to pass off as English? I am - and I must add in the same breath, dismayed and disenchanted.

Sloppy grammer only reflects laziness and lack of respect for those around you, just as does poor grooming. Once you form the habit of using good English when talking to your friends as well as your teachers or prospective employers, you will have attained another mark of poise." !!!
